Ksamil has become Albania's most photographed destination — three small islands just offshore, water the colour of the Maldives, and a beach scene that rivals anywhere in the Mediterranean. For most international travelers, getting there starts with landing at Tirana Airport.

It's a long journey. But a very manageable one, if you plan it correctly.

Why Ksamil?
Albania's most searched beach destination — and the longest journey from TIA

Ksamil sits at the very southern tip of Albania, just 4 km from the Greek border and 20 minutes south of Saranda. The three small islands just offshore are accessible by a short swim or paddle — a sight that's become synonymous with Albanian summer.

The beach scene is genuinely impressive: clear turquoise water, white pebbles, and a growing infrastructure of beach clubs and restaurants. It gets busy in July and August — which is also when the road from TIA gets its heaviest traffic.

Plan your arrival time accordingly. Mid-morning and early afternoon arrivals in peak season mean the smoothest journey south.

How Far is Tirana Airport from Ksamil?

Ksamil is approximately 300 km from TIA by road — the longest of the major Riviera routes from the airport. The journey follows the SH4 highway south through Fier and then continues past Gjirokastër toward Saranda, with a final 20-minute stretch to Ksamil itself.

Under normal conditions, the drive takes 3.5 to 4 hours. In July and August, add 30–60 minutes for peak season traffic, particularly on the coastal approach from Saranda south.

Timing tip

Arrivals before 14:00 in peak season typically make the smoothest run south. Late afternoon arrivals can hit both post-beach traffic near the coast and the general summer congestion on the SH4 corridor. If you're arriving late at night, the road is clear — but pre-booking is even more important after midnight.

Ksamil vs Saranda: Should I Stay in One or the Other?

Ksamil is a village built almost entirely around its beaches. Accommodation ranges from simple rooms to boutique hotels. The islands are the main draw. It's quieter than Saranda in terms of nightlife but busier on the beaches in peak season.

Saranda is a proper town — hotels, restaurants, a promenade, ferry connections to Corfu. It has more infrastructure, more options for dining and evenings out, and is 20 minutes from Ksamil by car or taxi. Many travelers stay in Saranda and visit Ksamil for the day.

Both are served by the same transfer route from TIA. Check current pricing for both on our booking page.

Your Transport Options

Pre-Booked Private Transfer
Recommended

Price: €139–€179 fixed, door to door

Time: 3.5–4.5 hours

What you get: Confirmed driver, fixed price, flight tracking. For a 300 km journey at the end of a flight, arriving to a name sign rather than a taxi negotiation is the difference between starting your holiday relaxed or stressed.

Best for: All travelers — but especially families, couples on a first Albania trip, and anyone arriving after 20:00.

Airport Taxi
Use with caution

Price: €150–€280+ (unregulated, negotiated)

Time: 3.5–4.5 hours

What you get: For a route this long, the gap between fair and overcharged pricing is substantial. Expect to pay €150–€180 if you negotiate well. Expect to pay significantly more if you don't. Know your number before you land.

Best for: Travelers who know Albania well and are comfortable negotiating a long-route fare at the airport.

Rental Car
Good option

Price: €35–€80/day + ~€45 fuel one way

Time: 3.5–4.5 hours

What you get: Excellent for exploring independently. Ksamil and the surrounding area — Butrint, the Blue Eye, Gjirokastër — reward having your own vehicle. Book far in advance for peak season. Parking in Ksamil itself is tight in July/August.

Best for: Travelers planning to explore southern Albania independently during their stay.

Bus + Furgon
Budget only

Price: ~€10–€15 total

Time: 6–8+ hours with connections

What you get: No direct service from TIA to Ksamil. Requires taxi to Tirana city, bus south to Saranda, then local transport to Ksamil. Feasible for experienced budget travelers with minimal luggage. Not practical as an airport-to-accommodation transfer.

Best for: Backpackers with time, flexibility, and no large bags.

Price Comparison

Option Price (TIA → Ksamil) Fixed? Flight tracking?
Pre-booked transfer €139–€179 ✅ Yes ✅ Yes
Airport taxi €150–€280+ ❌ Negotiated ❌ No
Rental car €80–€125 (day + fuel) ✅ Yes ❌ No
Bus + furgon ~€12 ✅ Yes ❌ No

The group calculation: For 3–4 travelers, a pre-booked private transfer to Ksamil works out at €35–€45 per person — comparable to or cheaper than rental car costs per person when you factor in fuel, insurance, and parking. And you arrive relaxed instead of navigating after 4 hours of driving.

What About Vlora Airport (VIA)?

Vlora Airport is not significantly closer to Ksamil than TIA — both routes involve similar total distances when travelling to the far south. The VIA advantage is most pronounced for destinations like Himara, Dhermi, and Vlora itself. For Saranda and Ksamil, TIA and VIA are comparable.

Check which airlines serve your origin city — if both airports are available, compare flight prices rather than assuming VIA saves significant transfer time for Ksamil.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long is the drive from Tirana Airport to Ksamil?

3.5 to 4.5 hours under normal conditions. In peak summer (July–August), allow the upper end of that range. The distance is approximately 300 km via the SH4 south.

Is there a direct bus from Tirana to Ksamil?

No direct service from TIA. From Tirana city there are intercity buses to Saranda, from where Ksamil is a short local taxi or bus ride. As an airport transfer, this involves multiple connections and is impractical with luggage.

Can I combine Ksamil and Saranda on the same trip?

Easily. They're 20 minutes apart. Many travelers base in one and visit the other — or split their stay between both. Local taxis between Saranda and Ksamil cost approximately €5–€10.

What's near Ksamil worth visiting?

Butrint National Park (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) is 7 km south of Ksamil. The Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër) is 25 km north — one of Albania's most striking natural attractions. Gjirokastër, a UNESCO-listed Ottoman city, is about 60 km north and worth a day trip.

Do I need to book my return transfer in advance?

Yes — especially in peak season. Leaving return transfers to chance in July or August creates the same problem as arrival: limited options, higher prices, no guarantees.
